Pelvic Health Physiotherapy

What is Pelvic Health Physiotherapy?

Pelvic Health Physiotherapy, also known as pelvic physiotherapy or pelvic floor rehabilitation, is a specialized branch of physiotherapy that focuses on the assessment and treatment of various conditions related to the pelvic floor muscles and associated structures. The pelvic floor refers to a group of muscles, ligaments, and connective tissues located at the bottom of the pelvis, which play a crucial role in supporting the pelvic organs, including the bladder, uterus, and rectum.

What is a Pelvic Health Physiotherapy Assessment?

A Pelvic health physiotherapy assessment is performed by trained physiotherapists who have expertise in the musculoskeletal and neuromuscular functioning of the pelvic floor. They employ a variety of techniques and interventions to evaluate and address issues such as muscle weakness, tightness, or dysfunction in the pelvic floor. During a pelvic floor physiotherapy session, the physiotherapist will conduct a thorough assessment of the pelvic floor muscles and surrounding structures. This may involve both internal and external examinations, depending on the specific concern. The internal examination is performed with the consent of the patient and if it is appropriate to treat the patient’s main concern. Based on the assessment findings, the physiotherapist will develop an individualized treatment plan.

Conditions that may benefit from pelvic health physiotherapy include:

  1.  Urinary incontinence: This involves the involuntary leakage of urine and can occur due to weakened or overactive pelvic floor muscles.
  2. Pelvic organ prolapse: It refers to the descent or displacement of pelvic organs, such as the bladder, uterus, or rectum, from their normal positions. Pelvic floor physiotherapy can help strengthen the muscles and provide support for these organs.
  3. Pelvic pain: Chronic pelvic pain, which may have various causes, can be effectively managed through pelvic floor physiotherapy techniques, including relaxation exercises, manual therapy, and stretching.
  4. Sexual dysfunction: Pelvic floor physiotherapy can assist in addressing issues such as pain during intercourse, difficulty achieving orgasm, or other sexual dysfunctions related to pelvic floor muscle dysfunction.

What type of treatments are used during a session?

During a pelvic health physiotherapy session, the therapist may use a combination of techniques such as manual therapy, biofeedback, pelvic floor exercises, electrical stimulation, relaxation techniques, and education on proper bladder and bowel habits. The treatment approach is individualized based on the specific needs and condition of the patient.

It’s important to note that pelvic floor physiotherapy should be conducted by a qualified healthcare professional who specializes in this area. If you’re experiencing symptoms related to the pelvic floor, it’s advisable to consult with a healthcare provider who can assess your condition and recommend appropriate treatment options, which may include pelvic floor physiotherapy.
