This condition has a terrible name as it scares a lot of people when they hear that they have this. The words “degenerative” and “disease” are enough to conjure images of a terrible looking spine. It simply is a condition where there is noticeable wear and tear of the disc and the structures around it. Everyone has these changes happening to a small extent usually starting in their thirties.
Treatment often includes education on what activities to avoid or modify. We also recommend specific stretches for the low back and leg muscles when the DDD is in the lumbar region. In addition, we offer a back strengthening program and other modalities such as acupuncture, dry needling, heat and ice, joint mobilizatons and in some cases even manual manipulation. We strive to get our patients back to the activities they enjoy while being pain-free.
